Solar power works using the sun’s ultra violet rays to heat panels (collectors) usually sited into the roof to generate hot water in your cylinder.
There are two types of collectors. Flat panel and Vacuum. In this country vacuum collectors are not necessary because we don't get the high temperatures they require to be efficient.
The benefits
During the months from April to September on cloudless days you will have free hot water. Because the sun’s rays will heat the cylinder and your boiler will not need to fire up! The system is automatic and works whenever there is a clear sky. When the cylinder is full of hot water the solar system will close down.
Through the winter the solar system will pre heat the cylinder on cloudless days which saves energy and wear & tear on your boiler / heat pump.
There is a grant towards installation and the RHI’s mean you can have a rebate of around £500 annually for 18 years if you install a solar system.
Is my home suitable?
Planning permission is not required.
All you will need is a south facing roof or space for a mounted collector to go. The collectors are 1mx2m and usually two will be required.
The cylinder has to have a second coil and we only install unvented cylinders for solar systems because these can be sited in the loft or anywhere convenient. They also provide high flow rates so bathing and showering is a pleasure.
Costs
A solar system can cost from about £3000 to £5000 installed and commissioned. They will come with a 5-10 year warranty and require little maintenance.
We can assess your requirements, deal with the whole installation and set you up for the RHI’s for life – just ask!!
